Monterey United is one of the most recognized and well known soccer teams on the Monterey Peninsula. The team was formed in 1984 by a group of international players, most of whom were English. After practices and games, the players and coaches had regular meetings at various local pubs, so they named themselves “The Pubs.” Over the years, the team has had players from many countries, including Italy, Mexico, Romania, Morocco, Germany, Brazil, El Salvador, Argentina, Russia, Tunisia, Vietnam, Korea, Japan, France, South Africa, and, of course, the United States. One of the original players, Tiziano Minelli of Italy, still plays with the team. The current team manager, Ioan Szasz of Romania, has been playing with the team since 1988.

The team’s name changed several times over the years to reflect its various sponsors: “Peacock Bar and Grill,” “Penny Farthing” and “Rose and Crown.” Since 1992 the team has been “Monterey United,” a name which reflects the many nationalities coming together to play the world’s greatest sport.

The team has played in several leagues, including the San Jose City League (Peninsula Soccer League), the Salinas Soccer League and the Monterey Peninsula Soccer League, where it has played since 1986 and has earned ten season championships. In the Salinas League, the team twice finished in second place; it took third place in the 1992 opening tournament. In the Monterey Peninsula Soccer League, Monterey United has been one of the most consistent teams in terms of players and strength. The team has also played in the California State Cup competition.

In addition to these outdoor leagues, Monterey United has participated multiple times in the soccer competitions at the Scottish Highlands Festival. Several members of the team have also played in the Watsonville Indoor Soccer League under the same name Monterey United, where they won two championships back-to-back.

Every year, teams in the league look forward to their chance to play Monterey United. We at Monterey United do our best to give them a game worthy of our name and our history.
